The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) recently convened an industry forum, bringing together over 100 representatives from various construction and engineering firms. The event focused on the upcoming procurement process for the main span and marine approaches of the Francis Scott Key Bridge reconstruction project. Attendees included prime contractors, joint venture teams, marine construction specialists, subcontractors, and professional service providers with experience in large-scale infrastructure projects.

During the forum, MDTA officials provided detailed information regarding the procurement strategy for this critical phase of the rebuild. The discussion encompassed the proposed scope of work, the anticipated timeline for the project, and key considerations for contracting. The main span and marine approaches contract is a significant component of the overall reconstruction effort and aims to ensure a clear understanding among potential industry partners.
The scope of this particular contract includes the construction of a cable-stayed bridge featuring a main span of 1,665 feet and a total length of 3,365 feet. The design specifies a minimum clearance of 230 feet over the federal channel, a steel edge girder and floor beam system, and a vessel collision protection system. Additionally, the contract encompasses the construction of approximately 660 feet of south approach bridge over the river and approximately 1,560 feet of north approach bridge over the river.
The MDTA anticipates releasing a Request for Qualifications for this contract in July, with a projected Notice to Proceed expected in the summer of 2027. While the procurement process is underway, other aspects of the rebuilding project will continue. Kiewit Infrastructure Co. is currently progressing with the installation of permanent foundation piles and the construction of a trestle, which serves as a work platform over the water.
Beyond the main span and marine approaches, the Francis Scott Key Bridge rebuild involves several other distinct contracts. These include the demolition of the remaining over-water structures and associated miscellaneous marine work, the construction of the south land approach, and the construction of the north land approach. Further details regarding the project and upcoming procurement opportunities are available on KeyBridgeRebuild.com/opportunities. The MDTA’s engagement with industry professionals is a key strategy to foster competition and ensure the efficient delivery of this vital transportation infrastructure.
