Washington County Government is set to host a community Flag Day Ceremony on Sunday, June 14, 2026, at the Washington County Public Safety Training Center in Hagerstown. The event, which begins at 10:00 a.m., aims to bring residents together to recognize the historical significance and enduring symbolism of the American flag. This observance occurs annually on June 14th, marking the anniversary of the Continental Congress’s adoption of the U.S. flag in 1777.
The original flag, as established by Congress, featured thirteen alternating red and white stripes and thirteen stars on a blue field, symbolizing the nascent United States. Over the centuries, the flag’s design has been updated to reflect the nation’s expansion, yet it has consistently served as a potent emblem of unity, liberty, and the sacrifices made for these ideals. This year’s celebration also holds particular resonance as the nation approaches its 250th anniversary of independence, and Washington County acknowledges its own extensive history.
