A significant new symbol of national pride has been erected at the William Preston Lane Jr. Memorial (Bay) Bridge. According to the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA), a large American flag has been installed on the causeway between the bridge spans, just west of the toll plaza, in commemoration of America 250. This initiative, driven by public interest and a desire to honor service members, marks a collaborative effort between state and local entities.

The imposing 30-by-50-foot flag was generously donated by the Queen Anne’s County Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion posts. The MDTA undertook the construction of the flagpole, which includes site preparation, foundation work, and lighting. Moving forward, the MDTA will be responsible for the flag’s maintenance and will ensure it is raised on federal observance days such as Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Patriot Day, and Veterans Day. This project reflects a commitment to celebrating national history and the values that unite the country.

The placement of the flag is intended to serve as a welcoming emblem for both residents and visitors entering Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Officials involved in the project highlighted its significance as a lasting tribute to those who have served the nation and as a symbol of community pride. The MDTA, which operates the state’s toll facilities using toll revenue rather than state tax dollars, sees this as an appropriate moment to enhance the visual presence of patriotism for the thousands of travelers who utilize the Bay Bridge daily. The installation was completed following construction that began in mid-May.
