These deceptive emails often utilize fraudulent addresses that may resemble official City of Frederick communications. Examples of these suspicious email domains include addresses ending in “@usa.com,” such as cityoffrederickmd.gov@usa.com, planning.frederick@usa.com, frederick.permits@usa.com, recreation.frederick@usa.com, and recreation.cityoffrederick@usa.com. The City strongly advises residents and developers to exercise extreme caution and to refrain from responding to or submitting any payments to these unsolicited and potentially fraudulent email communications, even if they seem to pertain to city business.
To protect themselves and the community from cyber fraud, residents who receive emails that appear to be from the City but seem suspicious are urged to report them immediately. These reports can be sent to publicaffairs@cityoffrederickmd.gov. Additionally, recipients of such emails should avoid clicking on any embedded links or downloading any attachments, as these could contain malware or lead to further fraudulent activity. By remaining vigilant and verifying all payment requests through official channels, individuals can significantly reduce their risk of falling victim to this widespread cyber scheme.
