The City of Frederick will observe its first-ever Juneteenth Community Celebration, a free event planned for Friday, June 19th, at Mullinix Park. This new city-sponsored occasion aims to honor the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and celebrate the rich history, culture, and community of Black Americans.
The celebration is scheduled to take place from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM and is designed to bring residents together in a welcoming park environment. Attendees can anticipate a variety of attractions, including food trucks, local vendors, community resource booths, and family-friendly activities. The event will also feature entertainment and a short program that will include remarks from city officials and local community leaders. Juneteenth, observed on June 19th, commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were informed of their freedom, over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Today, the holiday serves as both a recognition of freedom and a time for reflection on the history, resilience, and significant contributions of African Americans.
