The decision to acquire Birmingham-Southern College as a training location was based on a comprehensive evaluation of potential sites. The Coast Guard had previously issued a Request for Information seeking facilities that could accommodate approximately 1,200 recruits for lodging, include a medical facility for up to 1,000 personnel, and encompass 150 to 250 acres of land. Additionally, the criteria required 14 classrooms, each capable of holding 30 to 60 students. Birmingham-Southern College was identified as the most suitable option, offering turn-key ready facilities that meet the Coast Guard’s requirements and allow for the immediate commencement of training missions with comparatively minimal investment compared to constructing new facilities.
This initiative is a key component of the Coast Guard’s Force Design 2028 plan, a strategic blueprint intended to foster a more agile, capable, and responsive fighting force. The program has already demonstrated success, contributing to record-breaking recruitment numbers and a significant return on investment. Training operations at the new Birmingham facility are slated to commence in late 2026. The acquisition of the college is expected to result in substantial savings for taxpayers, estimated to be in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Alabama’s existing military infrastructure and resources are well-suited to support this new Coast Guard training center, further solidifying the state’s role in national defense.
The establishment of this training center is projected to enhance the Coast Guard’s capacity to recruit and train new members, supporting its goal of adding 15,000 new members by 2028. The Force Design 2028 strategy emphasizes the importance of investing in personnel to meet the increasingly complex maritime security landscape. This new facility in Alabama will provide the necessary resources and environment to equip the next generation of Coast Guard members with the skills and knowledge required to confront 21st-century threats and uphold homeland security.
