Admiral Lunday, with nearly four decades of service in the Coast Guard, brings extensive experience from a diverse range of global operations, including commands in the Indo-Pacific, the Persian Gulf, and cyberspace. His leadership is expected to guide the Coast Guard’s ongoing transformation efforts, specifically focusing on the Force Design 2028 initiative. This plan aims to equip the service with advanced technology, vessels, and aircraft, and to recruit the necessary personnel to operate them effectively.
As Commandant, Admiral Lunday will be responsible for overseeing the Coast Guard’s extensive global operations. These responsibilities encompass maritime law enforcement, border security, search and rescue missions, defense readiness, and cybersecurity. His leadership will be instrumental in strengthening the service’s operational readiness and ensuring that Coast Guard members and their families receive adequate support. The Force Design 2028 initiative, as detailed in a recent update, outlines reforms implemented since January 2025 that have reportedly yielded significant and measurable impacts for the American public.
The Coast Guard, under its current leadership and strategic direction, is reportedly in a strong position to secure U.S. maritime borders, facilitate the unimpeded flow of commerce, and respond swiftly to national and international contingencies. During Admiral Lunday’s tenure as Acting Commandant throughout 2025, the service achieved notable milestones and underwent significant transformation.
Key achievements highlighted for Fiscal Year 2025 include exceeding recruitment targets, enlisting 5,204 new members, which represents 121% of the annual goal and the highest number of recruits since 1991. Furthermore, the Coast Guard reported substantial increases in operational effectiveness, with seizures of illegal narcotics rising by 200% since January 2025. Interdictions, deterrence events, and the transportation of illegal aliens saw a 120% increase. In terms of life-saving efforts, the Coast Guard successfully rescued 4,946 lives during this period. These accomplishments are presented as evidence of the effectiveness of the reforms implemented under President Trump and Secretary Noem’s direction, with the report indicating a 6-to-1 return on investment for taxpayers resulting from these initiatives.
