The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) has initiated a significant project to bolster the structural integrity of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge by seeking proposals for enhanced protection of its main span piers. This initiative, detailed in a recent Request for Proposals (RFP), aims to implement the latest safety standards, exceeding current federal requirements and ensuring the bridge’s long-term safety and reliability for commuters and travelers. The project’s estimated cost is $175 million, funded entirely by toll revenues from Maryland’s toll facilities.

Qualified design-build teams are invited to submit proposals for a comprehensive undertaking that includes the complete design and construction of marine-based protective structures. These structures will specifically target the central span piers of both the eastbound and westbound sections of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. The MDTA will evaluate proposals based on a range of critical factors, including the firms’ relevant experience in complex infrastructure projects, their technical expertise, the qualifications of their proposed personnel, and overall cost-effectiveness. The authority is specifically looking for heavy marine firms with a proven history of successfully managing large-scale infrastructure projects and a demonstrated commitment to delivering high-quality outcomes.
The process for this project began with an industry forum held in October 2025, where MDTA representatives provided an overview of the anticipated design-build process and engaged with potential contractors, consultants, and subcontractors in the heavy marine sector. This engagement aimed to foster collaboration and provide clarity on the project’s scope and requirements. The deadline for proposal submissions is set for June 2026, with an expected award announcement in the Fall of 2026. Following the award, a Notice to Proceed is also anticipated in Fall 2026, which will trigger the commencement of additional geotechnical investigations as necessary, followed by the start of the design phase. Construction activities are projected to begin in Spring 2027.
The Bay Bridge Protection Project underscores the MDTA’s commitment to maintaining and improving critical transportation infrastructure. As the planning and design phases progress, the MDTA has indicated its intention to continue engaging with the community to keep the public informed and involved in discussions surrounding the project’s development. Further details and updates on these efforts can be found on the dedicated project page on the MDTA website. This project’s funding structure, relying solely on toll revenues, means that the cost of these enhancements is borne by the users of Maryland’s toll facilities.
