The incident occurred Monday afternoon near the White Rocks climbing area, a region known for its challenging terrain. Rescuers from Cumberland County, including the Monroe Township Fire Department and other local units, were the first to reach the injured individual. However, the steep landscape, challenging weather conditions, and difficult access prompted them to request assistance from the Maryland State Police Aviation Command. Trooper 1, a helicopter stationed in Baltimore, responded to the call.
Upon arrival, Pennsylvania rescue personnel had begun providing immediate medical care and stabilizing the man. The pilots of Trooper 1 skillfully maneuvered the AgustaWestland AW-139 helicopter to hover approximately 100 feet above the dense tree cover. From the aircraft, a Trooper/Paramedic was lowered to the ground. With the support of the on-site Pennsylvania rescuers, the Trooper/Paramedic secured the injured hiker onto a backboard and into a specialized extrication device known as a “PEP bag.”
Following the successful securing of the patient, both the Trooper/Paramedic and the injured man were hoisted into the helicopter. Trooper 1 then transitioned into a medical transport role, flying the individual to WellSpan York Hospital in York, Pennsylvania, for necessary medical treatment.
The Maryland State Police Aviation Command has been a vital resource for Maryland residents since 1970, operating a fleet of 10 AW139 helicopters from seven bases across the state. These aircraft are available around the clock, every day of the year, to assist with a range of missions including medical evacuations, law enforcement support, search and rescue operations, homeland security efforts, and disaster assessments. The effectiveness of these missions is attributed to the strong collaborative efforts between local fire departments, rescue squads, EMS providers, law enforcement agencies, and federal partners such as the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Park Police.
