The blaze required the response of 49 firefighters from the Hagerstown Fire Department, who worked for 32 minutes to bring the fire under control. The fire originated on an enclosed porch. Smoke alarms were present and activated, alerting residents to the danger. However, the structure was not equipped with a fire alarm or sprinkler system.
