A significant development reported from the meeting was the Board’s approval of nine additional full-time firefighter positions for the Division of Emergency Services in Fiscal Year 2026. This brings the total number of new firefighter positions authorized for the current fiscal year to eighteen. The approved measure also includes the creation of a second shift supervisor role, one of the nine newly approved positions. These strategic hires are intended to allow the Division of Emergency Services to distribute firefighters more effectively across multiple stations, thereby improving daily coverage and enhancing the reliability of emergency responses throughout Washington County.
Furthermore, the Board received an update on the new ambulance service established in South County on December 1, 2025, operating out of Boonsboro Fire Station #8. In its initial month and a half of service, this ambulance responded to nearly 70 calls, with 50 of those occurring in December alone. Of these calls, 38 resulted in patient transports. The addition of this unit has reportedly eased the demand on other county ambulances and improved overall emergency medical coverage.
In a move to enhance recreational facilities, the Board of County Commissioners gave its approval to submit a $700,000 grant application for the Fiscal Year 2027 Greenspace Equity Grant program, administered by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. If awarded, these funds would be dedicated to the Marty Snook Park, Multiuse Trail and Parking Project. This project aims to expand the park’s existing trail network, improve safety and accessibility, and address existing parking and pedestrian concerns. A notable aspect of this grant application is that it requires no local financial match from the county.
Additional actions taken by the Board included providing consensus to support two potential legislative items concerning county procurement processes. The Commissioners also authorized a modification to the Paramedic Program Memorandum of Understanding with Hagerstown Community College. This amendment is designed to better align with the current balance of students enrolled in the program, differentiating between those sponsored by the Division of Emergency Services and other students, ensuring a more equitable distribution of revenue. The Board also approved several purchase awards and contract renewals for various county departments.
