The Maryland Community Business Compass functions as a data-driven tool, offering small business owners direct access to crucial market demand insights, available government funding, and essential business support services. A particular focus of the platform is on businesses operating within or serving high-need communities. Developed by the Maryland State Innovation Team, the platform consolidates critical business information into a single, accessible location, streamlining the process for businesses to identify opportunities and secure the support they need. Key features of the platform include an interactive map to pinpoint underserved markets, such as areas lacking adequate child care services or fresh food retail options, a searchable database of approximately 250 state and local incentive programs that pulls together previously fragmented information, and a directory connecting businesses with support organizations like economic development agencies and small business development centers.
The $10 million in state funding has been specifically allocated to support small businesses that provide essential services. Of this total, $8 million is designated for child care businesses through the Child Care Capital Support Revolving Loan Fund. This fund offers zero-interest loans for various purposes including facility acquisition, expansion, renovation, and new construction. Businesses located in underserved or rural areas and those serving low-income families will be given priority in the application process, which remains open until January 30, 2026. The remaining $2 million is earmarked for fresh food businesses through the NourishMD Grant Program, which will be managed by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development. Eligible businesses, which include grocery stores, corner stores, farm stands, co-ops, farmers’ markets, and certain delivery retailers, can apply for up to $150,000. These funds can be used to establish, stabilize, or expand operations in areas identified as having limited access to fresh food. Applications for the NourishMD Grant Program will be accepted from January 20, 2026, to February 20, 2026. Washington County business owners are strongly encouraged to visit compass.maryland.gov to explore the full range of resources and funding opportunities available.
