The $10 million allocation for Fiscal Year 2027 represents a sustained effort to safeguard vulnerable communities. In Fiscal Year 2025, the grant program provided $5 million to 81 organizations. This funding facilitated security enhancements that reportedly made over 70,000 community members feel safer. The grants have been instrumental in supporting a range of security needs, from employing security personnel and implementing physical security upgrades like surveillance systems and reinforced entrances, to funding violence prevention programs and developing active threat response plans.
The Protecting Against Hate Crimes Grant Program is a key component of the administration’s broader public safety strategy. The Governor’s Office of Crime Prevention and Policy has utilized these funds to assist 183 organizations statewide. These grants have supported security enhancements at various locations, including places of worship, historical sites, and other organizations that serve communities often targeted for hate crimes. This initiative is designed to foster collaboration and information sharing among law enforcement, victim services, and targeted communities to develop effective public safety strategies.
The continuation of this funding is expected to yield significant benefits for Maryland residents. By supporting security upgrades and violence prevention initiatives, the program aims to ensure that places of worship, community centers, and other public gathering spaces are secure environments for all. This investment underscores a commitment to combating hate and ensuring that every resident can feel safe in their daily lives, workplaces, and places of worship. The program’s success in Fiscal Year 2025 included training for over 2,000 staff on security enhancements, conducting 400 safety assessments, and supporting 400 professional security personnel.
