This investment underscores Maryland’s growing prominence in the life sciences sector. Nature Cell America’s initial focus at the new facility will be on stem cell research, clinical trials, and the manufacturing of investigational products for knee osteoarthritis and Alzheimer’s disease. The company anticipates the capacity to produce an estimated one million doses annually of its product JointStem, an intra-articular stem cell injection. The decision to establish operations in Maryland was influenced by the state’s robust stem cell research funding and its skilled life sciences workforce. Nature Cell will collaborate with Biostar, a Korean holding company with extensive experience in stem cell technology, on this new U.S. subsidiary project.
The Maryland Department of Commerce is facilitating the project with a conditional loan of $4 million through the Advantage Maryland program, aimed at assisting with project costs. Additionally, the Baltimore Development Corporation is contributing a $400,000 conditional loan to support the company’s operations. Baltimore City will also play a role in expediting necessary permitting and public approvals for the development.
