Approximately 68,000 Trek and Electra-branded bicycles, along with replacement rear wheels featuring coaster brakes, have been recalled due to a potential crash hazard. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the coaster brakes on these bicycles may fail to engage properly, which could lead to a loss of control for the rider and an increased risk of accidents. The recall impacts specific models of Trek and Electra bicycles, as well as replacement rear wheels designed for these models, sold nationwide between August 2023 and September 2025.

The affected bicycles and replacement wheels are part of a recall initiated on November 13, 2025, affecting numerous models across different model years. Among the recalled Trek models are the Precaliber 12 (model year 2026), Precaliber 16 (model years 2024 and 2026), and Precaliber 20 (model years 2024 and 2026). The Electra brand’s recalled items include the Townie Rental 1 Step Thru (model year 2026) and the Sprocket 1 16 (model year 2026). Additionally, replacement rear wheels for the Trek Precaliber 12, 16, and 20 models, all designated as model year 2026, are also included in this safety notice. Consumers can determine if their bicycle or replacement wheel is subject to this recall by visiting a dedicated inquiry tool on the Trek website and entering their bicycle’s serial number. This serial number is typically found under the bottom bracket, between the pedals, and usually begins with the letters “WTU.” The bicycles were offered in a wide array of colors, including red, pink, blue, yellow, green, gray, and purple, among others.
Consumers who own any of the recalled Trek or Electra bicycles with coaster brakes, or a recalled replacement rear wheel, are strongly advised to immediately cease using the product. To address the safety concern, Trek Bicycle Corporation is offering a free repair service. Riders should contact an authorized Trek or Electra dealer to schedule an appointment for this repair. The recalled bicycles were sold at authorized Trek and Electra retailers across the country, both in physical stores and online, with prices ranging from $300 to $660 for the bicycles and $66 to $77 for the replacement wheels. While no injuries or incidents have been reported in relation to this specific hazard, prompt action is crucial for ensuring rider safety.
