Washington D.C. – Missouri is set to receive $59 million in initial funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to aid in the recovery from a devastating tornado that impacted the St. Louis region in May 2025. The funds, approved under the direction of President Donald J. Trump and Secretary Kristi Noem, will be instrumental in addressing the extensive debris left in the storm’s wake and accelerating the rebuilding process for affected communities.

The state of Missouri will spearhead the recovery efforts, with substantial support from FEMA and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). This collaborative approach aims to streamline the process of clearing thousands of tons of debris, demolishing damaged structures posing safety hazards, and stabilizing land parcels. The expedited funding will immediately become available to address these critical needs, including the necessary legal and environmental considerations for safe and responsible debris management.
USACE will deploy experienced debris experts, including the St. Louis District Commander, to work directly with the Missouri State Emergency Management Agency in Jefferson City. Their role will be to assist in the planning and management of the large-scale debris removal operation. Furthermore, USACE technical monitors will provide oversight to ensure compliance with federal guidelines as debris removal commences. This initiative follows a federal disaster declaration issued by President Trump for the severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds, and flooding that occurred in May 2025. FEMA’s Public Assistance program is designed to reimburse governmental entities for eligible disaster-related expenses, including debris removal, emergency protective measures, and permanent repairs. FEMA and USACE are committed to ongoing collaboration with Governor Mike Kehoe, the Missouri State Emergency Management Agency, and the City of St. Louis to facilitate a swift and secure recovery for the affected populations. While this initial funding addresses immediate debris removal, additional financial assistance may be awarded pending the documentation of validated costs incurred by the state.
