As part of the “Defenders of Democracy” initiative, the SBE is reminding voters of its online portal designed for reporting and addressing disinformation and misinformation related to elections. This portal, accessible on the SBE’s website, provides a platform for Marylanders to play an active role in identifying and halting the dissemination of false election-related claims. By utilizing this resource, citizens are empowered to contribute to safeguarding election integrity.
The SBE emphasizes that every voter has the power to combat disinformation. When encountering potentially false information, voters are urged not to ignore it. Instead, they are encouraged to report it, seek factual verification directly from the SBE, and subsequently share the accurate information. This collective action is presented as a vital component of strengthening democracy.
The disinformation portal is a key component of the SBE’s continuous efforts to protect the integrity of elections and ensure voters have access to reliable information. False narratives concerning voter registration deadlines, polling place locations, the process for mail-in ballots, or election outcomes can significantly erode public confidence in the electoral system. The portal facilitates a three-step process for voters: reporting suspicious or false election-related claims, verifying information through trusted SBE sources, and sharing correct information to help others.
The SBE strongly advises all Maryland residents to consider its official website as their primary and most dependable source for all election-related information. The agency highlights that a well-informed electorate is fundamental to democracy. By actively reporting disinformation and disseminating accurate facts, Marylanders are seen as defending the core principles of free and fair elections. The State Board of Elections remains committed to correcting inaccuracies and maintaining the public’s trust in the electoral process.
Media Literacy Week serves as an annual reminder of the significance of critical thinking and responsible interaction with media content. It promotes the evaluation of encountered information, the verification of sources, and the sharing of factual data to bolster democracy and civic engagement.
