A federal grand jury in the District of Maryland has indicted former National Security Advisor John Bolton, aged 76, of Bethesda, Maryland, on multiple serious charges concerning the alleged transmission and unlawful retention of national defense information. The indictment brings forth eight counts of transmission of national defense information (NDI) and ten counts of unlawful retention of NDI. These allegations suggest that Bolton improperly handled highly sensitive government documents, including information classified as Top Secret.

The indictment details that Bolton is accused of transmitting NDI by using personal online accounts, specifically personal email and messaging applications, to share sensitive documents. These documents reportedly contained intelligence related to impending attacks, foreign adversaries, and matters of foreign policy. Furthermore, the charges allege that Bolton unlawfully retained NDI documents within his residence. This retained information is said to include intelligence concerning leaders of adversarial nations, as well as details about the sources and methods used to gather intelligence on foreign adversaries.
The investigation leading to the indictment was conducted by the FBI’s Baltimore Field Office. If convicted on all counts, Bolton faces a potential maximum penalty of 10 years in prison for each count of unlawful retention of NDI and an additional 10 years for each count of transmission of NDI. The final sentencing determination will be made by a federal district court judge, taking into account the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other relevant statutory factors.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland, along with the National Security Division of the Department of Justice, is prosecuting the case. The indictment serves as an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
