Michael Guessford, who is a current Board of Education member for Washington County Public Schools, commented that “We need to protest.”

Michael Guessford comments "We need to protest" on Herald-Mail's article about the Islamic Society of Western Maryland's upcoming open house.
Michael Guessford comments “We need to protest” on Herald-Mail’s article about the Islamic Society of Western Maryland’s upcoming open house.

Guessford has been a member of the School Board since his election in 2014, according to Ballotpedia.

The protest comment was met with kindness and an offer by Hagerstown Area Religious Council for Guessford to meet and learn.

However, not everyone was as kind and welcoming, with multiple community members calling for Guessford’s resignation from the Board of Education.

Michael Guessford comments "We need to protest" on local Islamic Society open house announcement, resulting in calls for his resignation by community members.

“I’d like to see him take a step back and reflect,” said President of HARC Mark Perman in a statement to Radio Free Hub City. “Personally speaking I’d like to see him make amends. He should realize that being in a public position and in such an important role that he needs to speak with more forethought and sensitivity toward people of different religious backgrounds other than his own.”

Some residents have started a petition requesting Guessford resign. As of publication, the petition has now reached 285 signatures.

This isn’t the first time a Washington County School Board member found themselves in hot water for social media comments. In 2020 School Board member Jacqueline Fischer made comments that she hoped President Trump would die from COVID. And in 2016, School Board member Karen Harshman faced scrutiny for making claims that there were sexual predators in local schools, and that the school system wasn’t taking proper action. Both incidents resulted in the end of their time as School Board members.

“The comments of one individual Board member do not reflect the positions, Policies, and mission of the Board of Education,” said Dr. April Zentmeyer, President of Washington County Board of Education. “While Board members hold personal opinions, the Board’s collective work remains focused on providing a safe, respectful, and welcoming learning environment for each student in Washington County Public Schools.”

The Islamic Society however, responded with kindness and an invitation for all who made negative comments.

We have noticed some negative comments circulating about our upcoming Mosque Open Day. We would like to extend a special and sincere invitation to those who have concerns or questions to come and meet us in person.
Our goal is to build understanding and friendship within our community. The open day is an opportunity to see the mosque, meet local Muslims, and ask any questions you may have directly.
If there are misunderstandings or misinformation about Islam that you have come across, we warmly invite you to discuss them with us face-to-face. Let us learn from one another in a spirit of respect and openness.
Everyone is welcome.

The Mosque Open House is on Saturday, October 18, 2025, from 12 pm to 2:30 pm, at 2036 Day Road, Hagerstown, MD 21740. Attendees can take a Masjid Tour, Watch Live Prayer, participate in a Q & A session, and enjoy Free Refreshments and more.

No official statement has been sent to Radio Free Hub City from Michael Guessford, although he has apparently reached out privately to some of the people who publicly criticized him about the comments.
