To be eligible for consideration, applicants must be registered voters and residents of Washington County. Beyond these residency requirements, candidates must also fulfill at least one of the following criteria: they must have separated from U.S. Military service under honorable conditions, or they can be a non-veteran representing an organization that offers services to veterans. Additionally, a representative from the Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs is sought, as are representatives from organizations such as the Veterans of Foreign Wars, AMVETS, the Military Order of the Purple Heart, the American Legion, and Disabled American Veterans.
Members appointed to the Veterans Advisory Committee can serve up to two consecutive three-year terms. The committee typically convenes on the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m., although this meeting schedule may be subject to change. Individuals interested in applying are encouraged to visit the “Boards & Commissions” section on the Washington County website to submit their application and resume, or they can complete the designated application form. Further inquiries regarding the application process or the committee’s work can be directed to Dawn L. Marcus, County Clerk, at 240-313-2204 or via email at dlmarcus@washco-md.net. Serving on this committee offers an opportunity for residents to directly impact the support and resources available to the county’s veteran population.
