Chappell was selected by the Special Thanks and Recognition (STAR) Committee from a pool of 19 nominations, with three of those specifically highlighting his exemplary performance. His colleagues have praised his ability to go above and beyond in his investigative duties, often anticipating needs and proactively suggesting additional avenues for inquiry that benefit clients. His thorough review of cases and prompt, effective identification of areas requiring further investigation have been consistently noted.
The nominations also emphasize Chappell’s positive and supportive demeanor. He is described as an invaluable team member who is not only efficient but also consistently offers assistance to others. His willingness to provide support, share insights from his previous law enforcement experience, and offer an experienced viewpoint on evidence has proven beneficial to both attorneys and clients. Colleagues have highlighted his self-starting nature, infectious positivity, and ability to provide heartfelt support and humor when it is most needed, characterizing him as a true professional who treats clients with respect, empathy, and kindness.
Beyond his professional duties, Chappell has demonstrated a strong commitment to the well-being of his coworkers. One nomination recounted an instance where Chappell insisted on escorting a concerned colleague to their car at the end of the day, waiting until they left to ensure their safety. This type of protective and helpful action is reportedly not uncommon. He frequently checks on his colleagues and offers help with investigative tasks, embodying the spirit of a team player. His energy, reliability, skill, efficiency, and personality are cited as making him a pleasure to work with, and his presence is considered a significant asset to the public defender’s office.
His peers consider Chappell to be an outstanding investigator, noting that he effectively leverages his prior police experience to aid clients and provide attorneys with diverse perspectives on evidence. His willingness to assist wherever needed within the office and his passion for justice and kindness are seen as making the department a better place. The Franklin County Commissioners congratulated Chappell on his recognition, thanking him for his excellent work and for setting a high standard of knowledge, leadership, and excellence for both county employees and residents.
