Upon arrival, emergency responders encountered significant fire engulfing the two-story structure. The intensive blaze required the efforts of dozens of firefighters from the Corriganville Volunteer Fire Department and surrounding agencies. It took nearly an hour to bring the fire under control. Following the extinguishment of the flames, firefighters discovered the body of an adult victim within the home.
The victim has been provisionally identified as a 69-year-old female resident. Her remains have been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for formal identification and determination of the exact cause of death. The origin and cause of the fire itself remain undetermined and are the subject of the ongoing investigation. Investigators noted the absence of any sounding smoke alarms at the time firefighters arrived, and no evidence of smoke alarms was found within the residence.
Maryland State Police Crime Scene Unit personnel, along with K9 “Blondie,” assisted Deputy State Fire Marshals at the scene, a standard procedure in fatal fire investigations. During the firefighting efforts, one firefighter sustained minor injuries that were treated and released at the scene.
The Office of the State Fire Marshal is urging residents to ensure their smoke alarms are functioning properly. Prompt detection of a fire significantly increases the chances of safe escape for individuals and their families.
The investigation into the incident is being conducted in conjunction with the police agency that has primary jurisdiction over the area, which is typical for fatal fire incidents.
