The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has voiced strong disapproval of California Governor Gavin Newsom’s recent signing of the “No Secret Police Act,” a law that DHS asserts will hinder law enforcement’s ability to protect their identities and make them targets for criminal organizations and online harassment. This action by Governor Newsom comes at a time when Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers are reportedly experiencing a significant increase in assaults, including the use of vehicles as weapons, and are facing doxing campaigns that endanger them and their families.

According to DHS, law enforcement officers typically identify themselves during operations with clear markings on their attire and vehicles, while also employing masks for personal safety against sophisticated criminal elements such as the Tren de Aragua and MS-13 gangs, as well as other criminal rings and individuals convicted of violent crimes. The department contends that the new California law undermines these protective measures, potentially exposing officers to increased risk. DHS has stated its intention not to comply with what it deems an unconstitutional ban.
