Leesburg Library to Host Oral History Presentation on Revolutionary War’s 250th Anniversary in Loudoun

Leesburg residents can gain insight into the local commemoration of the American Revolution’s semiquincentennial through an upcoming oral history presentation at the Thomas Balch Library. The event, scheduled for June 11, will feature public historian Kenneth Bancroft discussing his project that captures the voices and efforts of those involved in marking this significant historical milestone in Loudoun County. The presentation is part of a broader initiative to document and preserve the county’s contributions and remembrance of the Revolutionary War’s 250th anniversary.

The presentation, titled “Reflections on the 250th Anniversary of the Revolutionary War in Loudoun: An Oral History Project,” will take place at 10:00 a.m. in the lower-level meeting room of the Thomas Balch Library. This initiative stems from support provided by the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors in May 2023, which endorsed the formation of a committee tasked with organizing events to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. Bancroft’s project involved interviewing local history organizations, enthusiasts, and community groups that were part of the Loudoun 250 Committee, creating an oral history record of the semiquincentennial commemoration. The collected oral histories will be integrated into the Sound and Moving Image Collections at the Thomas Balch Library.

Kenneth Bancroft, a public historian based in Virginia, brings a specialized focus on the Colonial and Revolutionary War eras to his work. His public history project, “The Journals of Nicholas Cresswell,” meticulously recreates a daily diary kept by Englishman Nicholas Cresswell 250 years ago, enhanced with further research and resources. Bancroft’s previous contributions include articles and displays about Cresswell featured on the blog Emerging Revolutionary War and at the Thomas Balch Library. He also co-authored the brochure “Preserving Our Heritage: Loudoun’s Revolutionary War Court Records” for the Loudoun County Historic Records and Deeds office, demonstrating his deep engagement with local historical preservation. His involvement underscores a commitment to supporting and advancing the study of local history.

The presentation offers an opportunity for community members to learn about the local efforts to honor the 250th anniversary of the Revolutionary War.
