The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has issued a statement detailing an incident at 26 Federal Plaza in New York City on Thursday, where protests involving elected officials and activists led to arrests and a subsequent bomb threat that prompted a building lockdown. The department asserts that certain politicians, whom it labels as “sanctuary politicians,” along with protesters, obstructed law enforcement operations and created a disruptive environment.

According to DHS, the situation escalated when an individual, identified as Brad Lander, arrived at the federal building unannounced with a group described as “agitators” and members of the media. Lander reportedly demanded the release of detainees, creating a scene that necessitated the involvement of the Federal Protective Service and the New York Police Department. This resulted in the arrest of 71 individuals, including Lander, two New York State Senators, and nine New York State Assembly Members. Following these events, a bomb threat was received, forcing the building into lockdown.
The detainees whose release was sought by the protesters include individuals with criminal convictions and ongoing legal issues. Among them is a suspected MS-13 member with convictions for criminal weapon possession and driving under the influence. Another detainee is an undocumented immigrant convicted of criminal gun possession. The group also allegedly includes an undocumented immigrant with a final order of removal who had been previously arrested for flying drones near the White House on multiple occasions. Furthermore, one individual was arrested with two kilograms of fentanyl, and another is an undocumented immigrant convicted of drug trafficking in Switzerland.
DHS condemned the actions of elected officials and protesters, stating that such behavior endangers law enforcement personnel and detainees. The department emphasized the critical role of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in apprehending individuals, including those with violent criminal records, to protect American citizens. DHS suggested that the repeated “vilification and demonization” of ICE officers is contributing to a significant increase in assaults against them.
This incident highlights ongoing tensions between federal law enforcement agencies and some local and state officials regarding immigration enforcement policies. The disruption at Federal Plaza and the subsequent bomb threat underscore the security challenges faced by federal facilities and the potential consequences of public demonstrations at such locations. Residents are reminded that access to federal buildings may be restricted during security incidents, and law enforcement operations are aimed at upholding federal law.
