Motorists in Leesburg, Virginia, are reminded by the Leesburg Police Department that citations for the newly implemented school zone speed safety program will commence on Monday, September 22, 2025. This program, which began its initial phase on August 21, 2025, is designed to bolster safety for students, pedestrians, and drivers by using cameras to record vehicles exceeding posted speed limits during active school hours. Following a 30-day warning period where violators received notices by mail, fines will now be issued, amounting to $100 per infraction.

The designated school hours are specifically indicated by flashing school zone signs. According to Virginia law, these speed limits are enforced only when the warning flashers are active, signifying student arrivals or dismissals. The selection of camera locations was determined through a comprehensive analysis of vehicle speeds, traffic volume, and pedestrian activity. These sites were chosen to represent various areas within the town, with particular attention paid to locations experiencing significant traffic, consistent speeding, and a notable presence of pedestrians, not exclusively school crossings.
The school zone speed safety program is currently operational at three key locations: Battlefield Parkway NE near Ball’s Bluff Elementary School, Potomac Station Drive NE near John W. Tolbert Jr. Elementary School and Harper Park Middle School, and along Dry Mill Road SW and Catoctin Circle SW at Loudoun County High School. Each recorded violation will undergo review by a Leesburg Police Officer to confirm accuracy before a citation is mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle. Further information and answers to common questions about the program are available on the town’s official website.
