The establishment of this museum is a legacy initiative stemming from Berkeley County’s 250th Commemoration. The Museum Commission is tasked with overseeing the development and ongoing operation of the regional museum. Furthermore, it will facilitate collaboration and communication among various museums and historical organizations throughout the region. The project’s scope also involves the preservation of Eastern West Virginia’s distinct history and cultural heritage, ensuring its accessibility for years to come. Berkeley County, originally formed on May 15, 1772, encompassed territories that now constitute Jefferson County and a substantial portion of Morgan County. Martinsburg served as the county seat for this gateway region of the Shenandoah Valley before the establishment of Jefferson County in 1801 and Morgan County in 1820.
