The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has announced the termination of the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation for Venezuela, a decision that will take effect 60 days after its official publication in the Federal Register. This move, effective September 10, 2025, will impact Venezuelan nationals who have been granted TPS. The department’s review considered various factors, including national security, public safety, migration, immigration policy, economic conditions, and foreign policy, concluding that maintaining TPS for Venezuela is not in the best interest of the United States.

The decision to end TPS for Venezuela follows a statutory requirement for the Secretary of Homeland Security to review the conditions in designated countries at least 60 days prior to the expiration of a TPS designation. This review involves consultation with appropriate U.S. government agencies. In this instance, a review by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, in conjunction with the Department of State, led to the determination that the conditions in Venezuela no longer meet the criteria for TPS. The administration stated that the continuation of TPS for Venezuelan nationals was viewed as undermining efforts to secure the southern border and manage migration effectively, citing a “clear magnet effect” of the program.
Venezuelan nationals currently holding TPS are being advised to utilize the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Home app to report their departure from the United States. This self-deportation process is presented as a secure method that may include a complimentary plane ticket, a $1,000 exit bonus, and the possibility of future opportunities for legal immigration.
