The preliminary investigation indicated that the fire originated in an exterior utility closet and was determined to be accidental in nature, stemming from careless smoking. While the restaurant was equipped with both smoke alarms and a fire alarm system, neither activated due to the specific location of the fire’s origin. The Fruitland Volunteer Fire Company was the primary responding agency, with 24 firefighters responding to the single-alarm incident. The fire was brought under control within 10 minutes of the firefighters’ arrival. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries or deaths as a result of the blaze, and no occupants were displaced. The Office of the State Fire Marshal is an agency within the Department of State Police that focuses on fire and explosion prevention through education, inspection, investigation, and fire protection engineering.
