According to a press release from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, CBS’s “Face the Nation” program significantly edited interviews with Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem during its August 31 broadcast, allegedly removing more than 23% of her responses. The department contends these edits distorted the factual information presented by Secretary Noem regarding national security concerns and the administration’s efforts to protect American citizens.

The Homeland Security Department asserts that the edited segments prevented viewers from receiving crucial details about individuals who pose a threat to public safety, specifically mentioning Kilmar Abrego Garcia, described as an MS-13 gang member and a human smuggler. The department claims that approximately 25 seconds of Secretary Noem’s explanation of Garcia’s alleged criminal activities, including accusations of domestic violence and soliciting nude photos from minors, were omitted. This information, according to the department, is vital for understanding the risks certain individuals present to the nation.

Further cuts allegedly removed Secretary Noem’s discussions about the department’s operations and commitment to fiscal responsibility. The department stated that excerpts detailing the successful apprehension of 5,000 undocumented immigrants in Los Angeles, many of whom were accused of severe crimes such as child trafficking and pedophilia, were shortened. Additionally, comments from Secretary Noem emphasizing her role as an advocate for taxpayers and her dedication to ensuring the proper and legal expenditure of public funds were reportedly excluded.

The department also highlighted the omission of Secretary Noem’s remarks concerning the expectations for all Department of Homeland Security employees to actively contribute to making America safer. Her expressed hope that every individual within the department would approach their daily duties with a focus on national security and productive contribution was apparently edited out.

A significant portion of the interview concerning the department’s hiring practices for new agents was also reportedly cut. Secretary Noem addressed questions about accelerating the hiring process for 10,000 new Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers, including changes to training durations and the availability of signing bonuses. The department maintains that Secretary Noem clarified that hiring standards were not lowered, but rather recruitment processes were made more efficient. This explanation, which reportedly detailed efforts to accommodate qualified former law enforcement officers and those returning from retirement, was allegedly excluded from the broadcast. The department also noted the removal of a brief transitional comment from the program’s host.
