A 61-year-old man was airlifted to the Bayview Burn Center in Baltimore after suffering first- and second-degree burns during a fire in Salisbury, Wicomico County. The incident occurred between on Joseph Drive, where the victim was burning trash and brush in a metal burn barrel. The fire spread to surrounding brush and eventually ignited the man’s clothing.

The Fruitland Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene following a neighbor’s call, arriving to find a small brush fire and the injured man. The fire was quickly brought under control within 10 minutes by approximately 20 firefighters. The Maryland State Police’s Trooper 4 helicopter was requested, and the victim was flown to the burn center for treatment.
Investigators have determined the fire was accidental, with heavy winds potentially contributing to the spread of the flames beyond the burn barrel. The fire caused approximately $75 in content damage but did not affect any structures, including a nearby shed that remained intact. No arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
