Kia America, Inc. has initiated a recall affecting certain 2025 Kia Sorento and 2025 Kia K4 vehicles due to a potential defect with the engine’s connecting rod bolts, according to a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The issue stems from the engine supplier, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama, potentially not properly torquing these critical bolts during the manufacturing process. This improper torque could lead to engine damage and a loss of motive power, increasing the risk of a crash. Owners may notice an engine knocking noise as a warning sign of this defect.

The recall encompasses one 2025 Kia Sorento, manufactured on June 2, 2025, equipped with a 2.5L TurboGasoline Direct Injection (T-GDI) engine. Additionally, 29 units of the 2025 Kia K4, produced between January 15, 2025, and August 1, 2025, and fitted with 2.0L Multi-Point Injection (MPI) engines, are also included. The total number of potentially affected vehicles is 30. Kia determined the recall population by reviewing its production and supplier records, noting that the affected vehicles were not necessarily produced in a sequential order based on their Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs).
Kia’s remedy for this recall involves a complete replacement of the sub-engine assembly. Owners will be notified by mail and instructed to bring their vehicles to a Kia dealership for the necessary repairs. The replacement engines will feature connecting rod bolts that have been correctly torqued. Kia has stated that vehicles produced after August 1, 2025, are equipped with engines that incorporate the correct torque specifications. The company will reimburse owners for any eligible repair expenses they may have already incurred. Customers can check if their specific vehicle is part of this recall by contacting Kia’s Customer Care Center or their local Kia dealer. VINs for affected vehicles will be searchable starting September 9, 2025.
The safety risk associated with this defect is a potential loss of motive power while driving, which can significantly elevate the possibility of a collision. Kia is advising owners of affected vehicles to “Do Not Drive” and to park their vehicles outside until the necessary repairs can be performed. This advisory is a precautionary measure to mitigate any immediate risks. The company plans to begin notifying dealers of the recall on August 26, 2025, with owner notifications for the remedy scheduled to commence on September 12, 2025, on a phased basis.
