Ford Motor Company is initiating a significant recall affecting nearly half a million of its popular SUVs due to a defect involving the rear brake jounce hoses, which could lead to premature rupture and a potential increase in stopping distances. The recall, as reported by the manufacturer, encompasses 2016-2018 Lincoln MKX and 2015-2018 Ford Edge vehicles. In total, approximately 499,129 vehicles are subject to this safety action.

The issue stems from rear brake jounce hoses that may rupture prematurely, causing a progressive leak of brake fluid. Drivers could experience a longer brake pedal travel and a corresponding increase in stopping distance, raising the risk of a collision. While the root cause is still under investigation by Ford, the company noted a decrease in repair occurrences after an improvement to the hose’s inner and outer braid material was introduced in December 2017. Drivers may notice changes in the brake pedal’s feel and travel, and a warning light on the instrument panel could illuminate if the brake fluid level drops significantly.
The recall includes 84,412 Lincoln MKX vehicles produced between November 11, 2014, and December 21, 2017, and 414,717 Ford Edge vehicles manufactured from June 25, 2014, to December 21, 2017. These vehicles are not necessarily affected in order of their Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs). To determine if a specific vehicle is included in the recall, owners can contact Ford’s toll-free line at 1-866-436-7332 or reach out to a local Ford or Lincoln dealership. Dealerships can access specific vehicle information through the Ford On-line Automotive Service Information System (OASIS) database. Ford plans to notify dealers about the recall on August 25, 2025, with owner notification letters expected to be mailed between September 8 and September 12, 2025. A phased recall for the remedy is scheduled to begin around April 1, 2026.
The remedy for this issue is currently under development. Once available, owners will be informed by mail and instructed to bring their vehicles to a Ford or Lincoln dealership for the necessary repair, which will be performed at no cost to the owner. Ford has indicated that VINs will be searchable for recall applicability starting August 25, 2025. The manufacturer advises that vehicles affected by this recall should be parked outdoors until the remedy is implemented.
