According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), C.A.M.P. USA Inc. is conducting a voluntary recall of approximately 12,600 Nimbus Lock Carabiners due to a malfunction that can lead to serious injury or death. The issue identified concerns the carabiner’s automatic closing mechanism, which may fail to properly secure, thereby posing a significant danger to users in climbing or similar activities. In addition to the units sold in the United States, about 2,100 were also distributed in Canada.

The affected products are Nimbus Lock Carabiners available in Gun Metal/Green, Gun Metal/Fuchsia, and Gun Metal/Blue color combinations. These carabiners were sold both individually and as part of larger kits, including the Nimbus Lock 3 Pack, Locker Draw KS, Energy CR3 Pack, and Energy Nova Pack. The recall specifically targets carabiners with batch numbers 10 23, 12 23, 02 24, 09 24, 10 24, 12 24, 01 25, 02 25, and 06 25. Consumers can locate the batch number on the side of the bottom of the carabiner. C.A.M.P. USA Inc., based in Golden, Colorado, imported these carabiners, which were manufactured in China.
The potential hazard stems from the possibility that the automatic closing mechanism could break, preventing the gate from fully closing. This failure could result in a user falling, leading to severe injury or death. While the firm has received 21 reports detailing instances of the closing mechanism breaking, no injuries have been reported in connection with this defect.
Consumers who have purchased the recalled Nimbus Lock Carabiners are urged to immediately cease using the product. To participate in the recall, customers are instructed to contact C.A.M.P. USA Inc. via their toll-free number at 877-421-2267, Monday through Friday, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Pacific Time. Alternatively, consumers can reach out via email at warranties@camp-usa.com or visit the company’s website at http://www.camp-usa.com/nimbus-lock-safety-recall-information. The company requests that consumers complete a recall registration form, print a prepaid shipping label, and return the recalled carabiners. C.A.M.P. will then inspect the returned units. Carabiners that pass inspection will be repaired and returned to consumers. Any units that do not pass inspection will be replaced free of charge.
These carabiners were available for purchase nationwide from January 2024 through July 2025 at various retailers, including REI, Portland Mountain Shop, and How Not 2, as well as online through websites such as Camp-usa.com, Backcountry.com, Amazon.com, REI.com, Mountainshop.net, and Hownot2.com. The price for the affected products ranged from $16 to $86.
