BMW of North America has issued a safety recall for 33 motorcycles across the U.S. due to a defect that could compromise rider safety in the event of an accident. According to a report submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the optional emergency call (eCall) system may have been inadvertently deactivated on select 2025 models due to an error in the company’s backend database.

The eCall system is designed to automatically alert emergency services with the motorcycle’s location following a crash, or manually if needed. BMW’s report indicates that although riders are notified of a failure in the system, that alert only appears once. If the rider misses or disregards it, future emergencies may go unreported, delaying assistance and increasing the risk of serious injury.
The affected models include various 2025 motorcycles such as the BMW F 800 GS, F 900 GS, R 1300 GS Adventure, S 1000 R, S 1000 RR, K 1600 GT, and R 1300 GS. Each of these was manufactured between March and April 2025 and comes equipped with the optional eCall system. BMW estimates that all 33 motorcycles subject to the recall are affected by the defect.

To resolve the issue, BMW will issue a software update via Over-the-Air (OTA) transmission. Owners will be contacted by mail beginning September 12, 2025, and advised to check their eCall functionality. If problems persist, they will be instructed to visit a BMW motorcycle dealership for a free remedy. BMW stated that the problem stems from a May-June 2025 software update that introduced incorrect information into its database, leading to the system deactivations.
There have been no reported injuries or accidents tied to the defect. Dealers were notified of the recall on July 23, 2025, and VIN-specific information will be made searchable by the public starting in September.
