A working smoke alarm is being credited for saving a Harford County family after a fire broke out in their home early Tuesday morning. According to the Maryland State Fire Marshal, the blaze began inside the attached garage of a two-story residence on Doncaster Road in Joppa around 2:27 a.m. on July 29. The fire, which caused an estimated $50,000 in damage, was discovered by the occupants after the smoke alarm sounded, allowing them to escape unharmed.

Fire crews from the Joppa Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company responded swiftly, deploying approximately 30 firefighters to the scene. They were able to bring the fire under control within ten minutes, successfully containing most of the damage to the garage area. Thanks to their efforts, the family remains in their home and was not displaced by the incident.
The incident highlights the critical role smoke alarms play in household fire safety. Fire investigators emphasized that the device gave the residents enough warning to evacuate safely. Notably, this is the second life-saving incident involving residential fire detection in Joppa within an eight-hour window. Earlier, a separate fire on Staysail Drive was contained by a sprinkler system, again preventing injury or displacement.
