More than 43,000 Mercedes-Benz Metris vans are being recalled due to a safety defect that could cause the rearview camera to fail temporarily while the vehicle is in reverse. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the issue stems from an inconsistent electrical connection that may impair rearward visibility and increase the risk of a crash.

The recall affects 2020 to 2023 model year Metris vans manufactured between June 2, 2020, and June 1, 2023. All affected vehicles are equipped with infotainment systems that may lose power due to faulty contact pins in the wiring harness. Mercedes-Benz determined that during strong vibrations or other conditions affecting contact force, the rearview camera display could momentarily shut off, potentially violating federal safety requirements for rear visibility.
The issue was first noticed during inspections in late 2022 when irregularities in speaker audio led to a broader investigation. Further analysis revealed that the infotainment power supply could be disrupted, and by mid-2025, Mercedes-Benz AG concluded that the defect could not be ruled out as a safety risk. The manufacturer voluntarily initiated the recall on July 4, 2025.

Mercedes-Benz dealers will rework the infotainment system’s electrical connections at no cost to the owners. The automaker assures that warning tones and other features of the Parktronic system remain unaffected. Owners will be notified before September 5, 2025, and the remedy will be available through authorized dealerships. For those who have already paid for repairs related to the defect, a reimbursement program is available with proper documentation.
The defect impacts all 43,422 vehicles identified, with a 100% estimated defect rate. The faulty components, supplied by Garmin Würzburg GmbH in Germany, have been replaced in newer production models following a supplier process change implemented after June 2, 2023. Vehicle owners can check their VINs for recall status beginning July 18, 2025.
