According to a company announcement published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Wiet Peeters Farm Products Limited has issued a voluntary recall of several mushroom products due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The affected products were sold under the Aunt Mid’s and Peeters Mushroom Farm brands and were distributed in Michigan and Ohio. Consumers in these states are urged to check for and avoid these products, as the bacteria can cause serious health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations.

The recall includes three mushroom varieties: Aunt Mid’s Fresh Sliced Mushrooms (227g, blue plastic package, UPC 0 33383 676005), Peeters Mushroom Farm Cremini Sliced (227g, black plastic package, UPC 0 68414 96960 3), and Peeters Mushroom Farm Thick Slice Mushroom (10lb cardboard box). All packages are marked with a “BEST BEFORE 25JL04” date. While no illnesses have been reported to date, the recall was initiated after Canadian authorities found Listeria in samples from the production line.
Listeria monocytogenes can lead to severe infections, particularly in children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems. Healthy individuals may experience symptoms such as high fever, headaches, nausea, and diarrhea. The bacteria also pose significant risks to pregnant women, including the potential for miscarriage or stillbirth.
