An ICE officer was injured after a federal enforcement operation in Carpinteria, California turned violent, following an incident involving U.S. Representative Salud Carbajal (D-CA). According to a statement from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the officer was targeted and assaulted by rioters after the congressman allegedly exposed his identity to the crowd, an allegation the congressman disputes. The July 10 raid at a marijuana grow facility led to the arrest of over 360 undocumented individuals and the rescue of 14 children from suspected trafficking and forced labor, according to the latest numbers released by DHS.

The confrontation began during a lawful search warrant execution involving ICE and CBP personnel. Rep. Carbajal reportedly engaged with an ICE Public Affairs Specialist and obtained his business card. ICE claims the congressman then displayed the card to the surrounding group of approximately 500 individuals, after which the identified officer was struck by a rock and sustained hand injuries requiring stitches. The crowd, described by ICE as rioters, also threw objects at law enforcement vehicles and personnel. ICE has attributed a recent spike in assaults on federal agents to public officials it accuses of undermining law enforcement efforts.
Rep. Carbajal, however, disputed ICE’s account of the incident.
“This is a blatant attempt to distort what occurred in Carpinteria,” said Rep. Carbajal. “DHS and ICE conducted their raid using a disturbing and disproportionate level of force, both on the farm workers they were targeting and the peaceful protesters who gathered to defend their neighbors. I witnessed agents, in full military gear, fire smoke canisters and other projectiles into a crowd of peaceful civilians. Just before I arrived at the scene, witnesses told me the agents threw a stun grenade into the crowd. Several civilians were injured, including a child.”
The congressman continued, “This aggressive behavior in a normally quiet part of the Central Coast sparked alarm across our community, prompting a flood of calls and messages to my office from concerned citizens. I went to the scene to seek answers and represent my constituents. In response to my questions, an ICE Public Affairs Specialist voluntarily gave me his card in full public view of the dozens of TV cameras, reporters, and livestreaming smartphones that were around us to film the interaction. ICE’s claims of ‘doxxing’ and ‘violent mobs’ are attempts to deflect attention from their unjust tactics, distort the facts to support misleading narratives, and avoid accountability for their aggressive actions that caused injuries and left our community traumatized.”

While the operation was disrupted by the crowd, DHS states that federal agents continued with arrests and child rescues. DHS confirmed that many of those taken into custody had prior convictions for serious crimes including rape, kidnapping, and child exploitation. The investigation into labor law and immigration violations at the facility remains ongoing. No statement has been released indicating whether additional charges will be pursued in connection with the attack on the officer.
