Mexican professional boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., identified by federal officials as a cartel-affiliated fugitive, has been arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and is facing expedited removal from the United States. Despite a history of criminal activity and a Mexican arrest warrant for weapons trafficking and organized crime, internal Department of Homeland Security (DHS) records during the Biden administration did not initially prioritize his removal from the country.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., son of the legendary boxing champion Julio Cesar Chavez, built a high-profile career in the ring with a record of 54 wins, including 34 by knockout, across 63 fights. He captured the WBC Middleweight title in 2011 and successfully defended it multiple times before losing it to Sergio Martínez in 2012. Beginning his professional career in 2003, Chávez Jr. competed across nine weight divisions, from super featherweight to cruiserweight, often headlining major events and appearing on pay-per-view cards.
Chavez is a Mexican national, and legally entered the U.S. on a tourist visa in 2023, later filing for permanent residency through marriage to a U.S. citizen. According to DHS, that citizen has documented ties to the Sinaloa Cartel, previously connected to the late son of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman. ICE arrested Chavez on July 2 in Studio City, California, citing national security and public safety concerns. Authorities determined on June 27 that Chavez was in the country unlawfully after making fraudulent claims on his immigration application.
Despite being identified as a public safety threat in December 2024 by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, a law enforcement entry in a DHS system marked him as a non-priority for immigration enforcement. In January 2025, the administration allowed Chavez to reenter the country through parole at the San Ysidro port of entry.

Chavez’s criminal history in the United States includes a DUI conviction in 2012 and a 2024 conviction in Los Angeles for possession and manufacture of illegal weapons. His alleged role with the Sinaloa Cartel, designated a Foreign Terrorist Organization, includes charges in Mexico for trafficking firearms, explosives, and ammunition. DHS now considers him an egregious public safety risk, and removal proceedings are underway.
Chavez’s arrest comes amid renewed federal efforts to crack down on cartel affiliates operating on U.S. soil. The Sinaloa Cartel has been linked to several high-profile crimes involving American citizens and is a major player in cross-border fentanyl trafficking.
