Thousands of Chevrolet Silverado medium-duty truck owners across the country will soon be contacted by General Motors regarding a major safety recall that could put their vehicles at risk of catching fire—even when parked and turned off.

The recall affects 62,468 Chevrolet Silverado trucks from model years 2019 through 2024, specifically the 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD versions. A manufacturing defect allows brake fluid to seep into the brake pressure sensor assembly, potentially short-circuiting the system. This can cause overheating and lead to an underhood fire. Although GM is aware of one fire incident linked to the issue, no injuries or accidents have been reported to date.

Until the issue is resolved, GM is advising owners to park affected trucks outdoors and away from buildings. A warning light indicating a service brake system malfunction may appear before the issue occurs. Owners will receive interim notifications starting July 28, 2025, with full repair instructions to follow once the fix is available. Dealers will replace the brake pressure switch wire harness at no cost. The updated part includes a silicone sealant designed to prevent fluid intrusion and eliminate the fire hazard.

GM traced the problem to a supplier’s use of an unauthorized chemical in the diaphragm of the sensor assembly, which degrades the rubber over time. Vehicles manufactured before the 2019 model year are unaffected due to different component designs, and vehicles built after September 9, 2024, use an improved harness already containing the silicone sealant.
