An early morning incident in Frederick has prompted a multi-agency investigation after a city police officer discharged his firearm during an attempted traffic stop related to a string of reported vehicle break-ins. Authorities say the driver fled the scene and remains at large.

At approximately 2:50 a.m. on June 29, Frederick Police Department officers responded to a call about a suspicious vehicle in the 1300 block of Mulberry Court. This followed reports of someone breaking into cars near Hillcrest Drive and Orchard Drive. An officer located a vehicle believed to be involved and attempted to pull it over. The driver refused to stop, turning into a dead-end cul-de-sac on Mulberry Court. As the officer stepped out of his patrol vehicle and gave commands, the suspect drove toward him, prompting the officer to fire four rounds from his service weapon.

The vehicle, later found abandoned in a nearby neighborhood, showed signs of damage consistent with gunfire. No injuries to the officer or bystanders have been reported. The Frederick Police Department has placed the officer involved on administrative leave, following standard protocol outlined in their use-of-force policy.
The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office is now leading the criminal investigation to ensure transparency and impartiality. Officials are urging anyone with information or footage of the incident to contact investigators. Community members can also provide tips anonymously through multiple platforms listed by the department.
