We know you value local news and entertainment that is free, open, and independent. Producing high-quality, paywall-free content isn't free. It takes time, effort, and resources to keep you informed and entertained. Unlike corporate media, we don’t have deep-pocketed investors or big advertisers funding our work—we rely on you, our readers and listeners, to keep Radio Free Hub City running. We're literally running on a shoe-string budget, but keep working hard to provide as much news and entertainment as we can.
If just 5% of local area residents became paid supporters at only $5 per month, we could meet our fundraising goals and continue expanding our news coverage depth while continuing to provide free access for everyone. So, if you'd like to help us in our continuing quest to improve our coverage, please consider becoming a paying supporter.
Will you be one of the 5%?

Councilmembers will first review and approve minutes from the June 3 and June 17 sessions, followed by the treasurer’s report and updates from community organizations, the police, planning and zoning, and public works departments. Several commission reports covering economic development, parks activities, planning, and ad-hoc projects will also be on the docket, giving residents insight into ongoing initiatives across town. Citizens wishing to comment on agenda or non-agenda items may speak for up to three minutes after signing in.
In old business, the council will consider launching an Economic Development Commission gift card program aimed at promoting local shops, as well as a resolution to join the Sustainable Maryland Certification Program, which could guide future eco-friendly policies. An introduction of Ordinance #2025-04, establishing a memorandum of understanding with Washington County’s Permitting Department, will also be presented to streamline permitting processes for local projects.

Under new business, councilmembers will discuss potential changes to the town’s 457 retirement plan for employees—an action that could affect benefit structures and budget allocations. The meeting will close with remarks from each councilmember, and information only items outlining a special session on July 15, the next regular meeting on August 12, and National Night Out scheduled for August 5. All sessions are broadcast live on the Town of Smithsburg Facebook page to allow remote participation.
