Early risers in the DMV may catch sight of a student-built sounding rocket streaking into the sky over the Chesapeake region between Thursday, June 26, and Sunday, June 29, weather permitting, with initial launch schedule for June 26 at 5:30 a.m. NASA’s annual RockOn mission will send dozens of college-level experiments aloft aboard a Terrier-Improved Orion rocket from Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia, offering local viewers a rare opportunity to see science in action just after dawn.

We need your help to stay paywall free

We know you value local news and entertainment that is free, open, and independent. Producing high-quality, paywall-free content isn't free. It takes time, effort, and resources to keep you informed and entertained. Unlike corporate media, we don’t have deep-pocketed investors or big advertisers funding our work—we rely on you, our readers and listeners, to keep Radio Free Hub City running. We're literally running on a shoe-string budget, but keep working hard to provide as much news and entertainment as we can.

If just 5% of local area residents became paid supporters at only $5 per month, we could meet our fundraising goals and continue expanding our news coverage depth while continuing to provide free access for everyone. So, if you'd like to help us in our continuing quest to improve our coverage, please consider becoming a paying supporter.

Will you be one of the 5%?

The RockOn flight window opens each morning at 5:30 a.m. and remains open until 9:30 a.m. EDT through June 29. Over the preceding week, teams of two students and one faculty member will have assembled their experiments at Wallops, learning to design, build and test payloads before they fly. All 28 selected teams—from community colleges and universities nationwide—are guaranteed a spot aboard the six-stage rocket, which will carry their instruments more than 50 miles up to collect data on atmospheric conditions, radiation levels and other scientific objectives.

Enthusiasts wanting to make the drive to the eastern shore for a more up-close look can also gather at NASA’s Wallops Visitor Center launch viewing area, which opens at 5 a.m. Visitors will find five sets of bleachers overlooking the launch pad and marshland, with live range-control audio piped in through loudspeakers. On a clear morning, the ascent may be visible from vantage points across Maryland’s eastern shore and beyond, including possibly the Hagerstown, Maryland area. For those unable to travel, a mission livestream begins 15 minutes before liftoff on the Wallops YouTube channel, with real-time updates on the Wallops Facebook page.

Teams participating in RockOn will have spent June 20–25 at Wallops Flight Facility fine-tuning their projects under NASA mentorship. No prior experience is required; organizers provide all necessary training and materials. Community college and university groups must apply together, and competition is stiff—only 28 teams earn the chance to launch. Successful applicants receive full access to NASA labs, engineering guidance and data analysis support throughout the workshop.

Viewers should plan for early-morning travel, monitor local weather forecasts for clear skies, and consider arriving well before sunrise to secure a spot in the bleachers. Those relying on the livestream should subscribe to the Wallops channel and enable notifications to ensure they don’t miss the countdown.
