A major drug seizure in Baltimore has prevented nearly 700 pounds of a powerful hallucinogenic from reaching Harford County, potentially averting a dangerous influx of the illegal substance into the community. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers intercepted the shipment earlier this month, highlighting the continued threat posed by international drug trafficking through shipping routes.

According to CBP, officers at the Port of Baltimore confiscated 695 pounds of Dimethyltryptamine (DMT), a Schedule I controlled substance, during an inspection of three separate air cargo shipments from Chiapas, Mexico. The shipments, which arrived between May 7 and May 27, were all addressed to a location in Harford County, Maryland. Upon inspection, officers discovered 300 vacuum-sealed bags containing a brown powder, which was later confirmed by lab analysis on June 6 to be DMT.

The seized drugs, with an estimated street value of $555,000, were intended for illicit use. DMT produces brief but intense psychedelic effects similar to LSD and has no approved medical applications in the United States. It is commonly abused in various forms, including smoking, snorting, and as an ingredient in brews like Ayahuasca.

Officials say this seizure demonstrates the continuing efforts by CBP to prevent dangerous narcotics from entering U.S. communities. The agency noted that the rise of global shipping has made it easier for traffickers to distribute controlled substances, often exploiting gaps in cargo screening. The investigation into the source and intended recipients of the DMT shipment is ongoing.

This enforcement action serves as a reminder to residents that drug trafficking remains a persistent threat, and that federal authorities are actively working to disrupt these operations before substances reach local neighborhoods.
