A federal grand jury indicted 37-year-old Steven Hartford on June 18, 2025, accusing him of using a TikTok account to post multiple threats targeting a woman identified in news media clips as a potential Democratic presidential nominee. The threats were made in July 2024 in response to videos speculating on the candidate’s role in the upcoming election. The posts included explicit statements of intent to cause harm, referencing firearms and ammunition.
According to the indictment, Hartford commented twice on videos published by a media outlet’s TikTok account, stating he would assassinate the candidate if she ran for president. Additional posts made the following day contained further threats referencing ammunition calibers commonly associated with firearms. The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Secret Service.

The initiative draws resources from programs like Project Safe Neighborhood and the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces.
If convicted, Hartford faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison, along with supervised release, financial penalties, and a mandatory special assessment. As with all indictments, the charges are allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
