Thousands of Mercedes-Benz owners across the country will soon receive recall notices for their GLC SUVs, after a federal investigation revealed a potential safety defect that could increase the risk of injury for rear-seat passengers during unbelted crash scenarios. The recall affects more than 92,000 hybrid and gasoline-powered SUVs from model years 2023 to 2025.

The issue, discovered during third-party testing on behalf of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), centers around the rear roof lining in vehicles equipped with panoramic sunroofs. According to the manufacturer, the stiffness of the roof lining may lead to excessive head injury criteria (HIC) values, meaning it could fail to meet federal crash safety standards in specific unbelted crash tests. Mercedes-Benz confirmed the defect and initiated the recall after internal investigations in May 2025 revealed inconsistencies with federal safety requirements.

Models affected include the GLC 300, GLC 300 4MATIC, GLC 350E 4MATIC (hybrid), AMG GLC 43 4MATIC, and AMG GLC 63 S E (hybrid). All vehicles were manufactured between August 29, 2022, and June 1, 2025. The company estimates 100% of the 92,851 vehicles involved could contain the defect. Owners are advised not to ignore recall notifications and to schedule service promptly once they are contacted.
Mercedes-Benz dealers will perform the necessary repairs free of charge, reworking the C-pillar trim and roof lining to bring the vehicles into compliance with federal safety standards. Dealer notifications are scheduled to begin on June 13, 2025, with consumer notifications following before August 4, 2025. No injuries, accidents, or warranty claims related to the issue have been reported so far.
