The issue, discovered during third-party testing on behalf of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), centers around the rear roof lining in vehicles equipped with panoramic sunroofs. According to the manufacturer, the stiffness of the roof lining may lead to excessive head injury criteria (HIC) values, meaning it could fail to meet federal crash safety standards in specific unbelted crash tests. Mercedes-Benz confirmed the defect and initiated the recall after internal investigations in May 2025 revealed inconsistencies with federal safety requirements.
