Officer Langley Dean, a 19-year veteran and K9 handler with the Hagerstown Police Department, was released today from Meritus Medical Center after five nights and two surgeries. He will continue his rehabilitation at home with his family and his partner, Basco, while the community’s “Support Dean” apparel campaign works to ease the resulting expenses.

We know you value local news and entertainment that is free, open, and independent. Producing high-quality, paywall-free content isn't free. It takes time, effort, and resources to keep you informed and entertained. Unlike corporate media, we don’t have deep-pocketed investors or big advertisers funding our work—we rely on you, our readers and listeners, to keep Radio Free Hub City running. We're literally running on a shoe-string budget, but keep working hard to provide as much news and entertainment as we can.

On June 12, officers responded to a North End home on a domestic violence call. After safely ushering the victim and her two unharmed children into an ambulance, a Crisis Negotiation Team spent eight hours urging the suspect, 40-year-old Daniel Matthew Anderson, to surrender. Shortly before 4:35 pm, negotiators forced entry; Anderson then fired a 20-gauge shotgun at close range, striking Officer Dean in the arm, shoulder, face and head. Paramedics on scene provided immediate care and rushed him into surgery.
Following two operations to repair his arm and treat other injuries, doctors expect Officer Dean will need several more procedures and months of physical therapy before he can return to duty. His discharge today marks the start of a prolonged recovery period, as he settles into home care under the watchful support of his loved ones.

Local residents have shown their support by purchasing specially designed olive-drab T-shirts and hoodies through a special apparel campaign. A portion of every sale goes directly into a relief fund for Dean’s mounting bills and day-to-day costs. In addition to financial contributions, community members have shared messages of gratitude and prayers, reinforcing the department’s view that Hagerstown stands firmly behind those who protect it.
The Hagerstown Police Department has issued a message of thanks to everyone for their unwavering support and for the collaborative efforts of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Maryland State Police, Frederick City Police Department, Hagerstown Fire Department, Department of Emergency Services, Auxiliary Police and Community Rescue Service. As Officer Dean begins his home recovery, the city’s collective backing underscores the deep respect for those who risk their lives in service.
Officer Dean will also be presented a Hero Award during the 9th Annual Public Safety Awards ceremony this August, for lifesaving actions during a violent assault in 2024.
