Residents of Hagerstown are rallying behind Officer Langley Dean, a 19-year veteran and dedicated K9 handler with the Hagerstown Police Department, who was critically injured in the line of duty on June 12. Through a community-led fundraiser featuring “Support Dean” T-shirts and hoodies, a portion of every sale will help offset related expenses of Officer Dean and his family as he continues his recovery at Meritus Medical Center.

We need your help to stay paywall free

We know you value local news and entertainment that is free, open, and independent. Producing high-quality, paywall-free content isn't free. It takes time, effort, and resources to keep you informed and entertained. Unlike corporate media, we don’t have deep-pocketed investors or big advertisers funding our work—we rely on you, our readers and listeners, to keep Radio Free Hub City running. We're literally running on a shoe-string budget, but keep working hard to provide as much news and entertainment as we can.

If just 5% of local area residents became paid supporters at only $5 per month, we could meet our fundraising goals and continue expanding our news coverage depth while continuing to provide free access for everyone. So, if you'd like to help us in our continuing quest to improve our coverage, please consider becoming a paying supporter.

Will you be one of the 5%?

Officer Dean suffered serious wounds to his arm, shoulder, face and head when he was shot at close range with a 20-gauge shotgun while responding to a domestic violence call in Hagerstown’s North End. After emergency surgery, he remains hospitalized in stable condition, surrounded by loved ones and colleagues. Over his nearly two-decade career, Dean has been credited with saving at least four lives and will be honored with the Hero Award at August’s Washington County Public Safety Awards for his life-saving actions in June 2024.

Organizers have partnered with Tindal Design Studio to offer “Support Dean” apparel online. Community members can scan a QR code or visit the dedicated Shopify page to choose from shirts and hoodies in olive drab, all featuring a custom K9 badge design. Each purchase ensures a direct contribution to the Dean family’s fund, reducing financial strain during Officer Dean’s extended recovery.

Beyond showing solidarity, the fundraiser gives Hagerstown residents a practical way to assist one of their own. Proceeds will help cover mounting bills, rehabilitation costs and everyday household expenses that the Dean family faces while Officer Dean is away from duty. Supporters are encouraged to share the campaign on social media and within neighborhood groups to maximize contributions and illustrate the community’s gratitude.

As Officer Dean continues his road to recovery, the city’s outpouring of support reflects the deep respect held for those who risk their lives to keep Hagerstown safe. By purchasing a “Support Dean” item, residents not only offer financial relief but also send a powerful message of unity and appreciation to a dedicated public servant and his family.
