Thousands of Kawasaki motorcycle owners across the country may need to take urgent action after a new federal safety recall was issued due to a defect that could lead to engine power loss while riding. According to documents submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall involves approximately 17,792 motorcycles manufactured between April 3, 2023, and April 28, 2025. The defect is linked to over-torqued bolts in the crankshaft assembly, which may cause the #5 metal crankshaft bushing to seize. If this occurs, it can result in a sudden loss of engine power, significantly increasing the risk of a crash.
No warning signs are expected before the failure, and the affected models include various versions of the ZX636J/K Ninja ZX-6R, including ABS and KRT Editions. Kawasaki estimates that around 1% of the motorcycles in this group may actually experience the issue, but has initiated a phased recall out of caution.

The motorcycles in question run on compressed natural gas, a relatively uncommon fuel type in consumer motorcycles. Owners are advised not to drive the affected vehicles until the necessary repairs have been completed. Kawasaki has not yet announced a final schedule for owner notifications or when a searchable VIN database will be made available, but riders are urged to contact their dealer or Kawasaki directly for further guidance.
